Chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee Pramodya Wickramasinghe has said that selectors want to give an opportunity to former skipper Angelo Mathews to return to the ODI side.
Wickramasinghe said that Mathews was included in the Sri Lanka A team against the visiting England Lions, to give him some match practice ahead of selecting him targeting the ODI World Cup to be held in India later this year.
Speaking in an interview, the chief selector said that it was still important for Mathews to prove his fitness, fielding and running between the wickets to return to white ball cricket.
He further said that Mathews’ vast experience can be an advantage for the young Sri Lankan ODI side.
Playing in the 2nd unofficial ODI against the Lions on Saturday (18), Mathews scored a 53 ball 50 to help the A team pose commanding 315/7 and eventually win the game. (NewsWire)
