Opposition Parliamentarians launched a protest in Parliament today demanding the Government hold the Local Government Elections.
Several opposition MPs from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) party were seen chanting and holding placards with slogans urging the government to hold the election.
Opposition MPs were also seen standing in front of the Speaker and government MPs, holding their placards and continuing to chant calling for the elections to be held.
Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, thereafter, adjourned Parliament until 09.30 am tomorrow (21).
The National Election Commission initially announced that the Local Government Polls will be held on 09th March 2023.
However last week, postal voting for the election was postponed indefinitely due to the Government Printers not having printed and handed over the ballot papers for postal voting.
The Government Printers had pointed out the lack of funds to print the necessary ballot papers for postal voting.
The National Election Commission yesterday filed a motion with the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka citing difficulties, including the lack of funds, in holding the elections as scheduled. (NewsWire)
