The ancient stage of the Russian House in Colombo was meticulously decorated in crystals and flowers, soaking in the light from dozens of candlesticks – creating the right kind of mood to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of the outstanding composer, pianist and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff.

These days, Rachmaninoff’s talent is being widely celebrated all around the world as one of the most significant cultural events, resonating in all the most prestigious music halls on the planet, the Russian Embassy in Colombo said in a statement.

Rachmaninoff has no peer when it comes to emotional intensity, virtuoso technique and timeless tradition. The musician who defined Russian romanticism in music is rightfully considered one of the greatest composers and pianists of all time.

“I am a Russian composer and my homeland has left an imprint on my character and my views. My music is the fruit of my character and, therefore, it is Russian music,” Rachmaninoff always said.

The Russian Embassy further said it was truly delighted to see the young Sri Lankan talents play Rachmaninoff’s signature pieces on the stage.

“Pruthuvi Prabhashwara, Manoj Wijayawardena, Dhanika Wijesiri, Navendra Marcelline, thank you so much for your performance! We would also like to thank  Aithri by Gihan Karunanayake, Pubudu Wijesinghe & Kanchana de Silva (Shindig Productions) for creating this magical setting and atmosphere,” it added.
