The Colombo District Court has issued two injunctions against Social media activist Dharshana Handungoda preventing the broadcast of ‘YouTube’ videos detrimental to the reputation of the Additional Solicitor General at the Attorney General’s Department and a senior state lawyer.

Colombo District Magistrate Poornima Paranagame issued the order after taking up for consideration a complaint filed by three persons from the Attorney General’s Department, including the Additional Solicitor General.

Issuing the order, the justice stated that the two injunctions are effective until May 10, 2023.

The order prevents the broadcasting of false information pertaining to the case filed with regard to the compensation related to the X-Press Pearl disaster, a topic largely being discussed on social media.

The lawyer representing the plaintiffs had informed the court that the accused had broadcasted a video consisting of false information with regard to the matter on 20th April 2023 causing severe inconvenience to his clients.

A request was also made from the court for a compensation of Rs. 1 billion and Rs. 500 million for the two affected individuals. (NewsWire)
