The Court of Appeal on Wednesday (13) issued an order to immediately arrest State Minister Sanath Nishantha over contempt of court charges and produce him in court.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has been instructed to arrest the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP and produce him in court.
On 29th September, the Court of Appeal issued a summons to State Minister Sanath Nishantha to appear in court today, 13 October.
However, as the State Minister had failed to appear in court today, the Court of Appeal instructed the IGP to immediately arrest him.
Sanath Nishantha was accused of contempt of court by several parties in August.
He is accused of stating the officers from the Attorney General’s Department and some judges are responsible for letting loose criminals who engaged in the violence in Sri Lanka in May.
“Some judges should take responsibility for this, they give bail for these criminals in one day,” he said, during a press briefing in August.
A petition was thereafter filed at the Court of Appeal by a lawyer accusing State Minister Sanath Nishantha of contempt of court. (NewsWire)
