Mahesh Gammanpila, Chief Secretary of Uva Province and former Director of the National Fertiliser Secretariat, was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) over a controversial organic fertiliser import deal.
The arrest is linked to allegations that, while serving as Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, Gammanpila instructed the reopening of suspended Letters of Credit to facilitate the import of substandard organic fertiliser from a Chinese company.
Gammanpila, who also serves as president of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service Association, is a longstanding figure in the country’s civil service. His arrest marks a significant development in broader investigations into corruption and public sector management.
Following his arrest, Gammanpila was remanded until May 5. Investigations are ongoing. (Newswire)
