M.F.M. Fazeer, Secretary of the Young Journalists Association (YJA) and a court reporter, was allegedly forcibly removed from the Kuliyapitiya Magistrate’s Court while covering proceedings.

The incident occurred during a hearing related to a case against police officers accused of arresting, torturing, and robbing a businessman in 2022.

According to Fazeer, two police officers approached him as he was taking notes inside the courtroom, dragged him out, and barred him from continuing his reporting.

The Young Journalists Association condemned the incident and lodged a complaint with the Department of Government Information, citing an attack on press freedom and obstruction of justice.

Following the complaint, Director General of Government Information H.S.K.J. Bandara has written to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), calling for a full investigation into the incident.

He has also urged appropriate disciplinary action against the officers involved, should the allegations be proven. (Newswire)
