1,608 Sri Lankan illegal migrants have been repatriated from Malaysia with the assistance of the Sri Lankan High Commission between the period of March 1, to April 30, 2024.
The effort is in coordination with the Malaysian Government’s Migrant Repatriation Programme, the Sri Lanka High Commission in Kuala Lumpur said.
Prior to the programme, from January 1 to February 28, 2024, the High Commission had already facilitated the repatriation of 124 illegal migrants stranded in Malaysia, bringing the total number of repatriations to 1,732.
The Migrant Repatriation Programme initiated by the Malaysian Government, aims to assist illegal immigrants in voluntarily returning to their home countries by providing legal exemptions and financial relief.
During the programme special attention was given to vulnerable groups, including the elderly, pregnant women, individuals requiring medical assistance, and children under the age of twelve, the High Commission said. (Newswire)
