7 missing in Sri Lanka due to floods

Seven persons are reported missing due to floods in the Ampara District as a result of the inclement weather conditions experienced in Sri Lanka.

Addressing the media today, Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa said that the missing persons were the passengers of a tractor that had toppled over in Karaitivu yesterday. 

He said at the time of the incident, the tractor had been transporting 11 schoolchildren. Soon after the incident, five children were rescued, while six children, the driver of the tractor and his assistant were reported missing.

DIG Thalduwa said the body of one child was found this morning, while the others remain missing. 

The Police Spokesman requested motorists to refrain from using roads if visibility is less due to floods or inclement weather conditions as it could result in disaster incidents and deaths.

As of 09.00 am today, the Disaster Management Centre reports that 207,582 persons from 59,269 families have been severely affected due to adverse weather.

The DMC stated that 02 deaths and 08 injuries have been reported, while 07 persons are reported missing. (Newswire)
