Wimal’s Party to skip Election, urges majority for NPP

Former Minister Wimal Weerawansa’s National Freedom Front has announced that the party will not contest in the upcoming Parliamentary election.

“As a political movement rooted in the anti-imperialist tradition, and one that respects and is entitled to the historical legacy of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, we are committed to safeguarding the mandate that brought the President to power and standing up for the expectations of the people who created that mandate,” Weerawansa said in a statement.

The move, he said, is aimed at ensuring that newly elected President Anura Kumara Dissanayake secures a majority in Parliament, allowing him to govern without relying on the support of other coalition parties, which could influence decisions if a majority is not achieved.

The decision was taken in consultation with all levels of the party, Weerawansa said, adding that the party will issue a policy statement on the upcoming general elections over the next few days.

Opposition forces are involved in an imperialist conspiracy to make President Anura Dissanayake the “Second Gotabaya” Weerawansa alleged, stating that the NFF will not be party to such efforts. (Newswire)
