The Intertropical Convergence Zone, where winds from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres converge, currently affects Sri Lanka’s weather, according to the Department of Meteorology.

As such, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and the Galle and Matara districts today.

Heavy falls above 100 mm are likely at some places in these areas, while showers or thundershowers will occur elsewhere on the island after 1.00 pm.

Fairly heavy falls about 75 mm are likely at some places in the Central, and Uva provinces and the Batticaloa, Ampara and Polonnaruwa districts.

The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the other sea areas around the island during the evening or night.

Winds will be South-westerly and wind speed will be 25-35 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 45 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambanthota.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambanthota can be fairly rough at times. The other sea areas around the island can be slight to moderate. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (Newswire)
