The Court of Appeal today dismissed the writ petition filed by suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon’s lawyers seeking to cancel the arrest order issued by the Matara Magistrate’s Court.
The Court ordered the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to immediately arrest Deshabandu Tennakoon and produce him in court.
Having taken up for consideration the writ petition filed by Tennakoon on 12 March, the Court of Appeal was set to deliver its judgement on the matter today.
The judgement to dismiss Deshabandu Tennakoon’s petition was issued by the Court of Appeal Justices Justice Mohammed Thahir Laffar and Sarath Dissanayake today.
Suspended IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon is wanted in connection with the 2023 shooting incident at a prominent hotel in Weligama.
The Matara Magistrate’s Court had issued an order to arrest Tennakoon, after which he had filed a writ petition in the Court of Appeal seeking an interim order to suspend the Matara Magistrate’s directive.
However, the Matara Magistrate’s Court recently issued an open warrant for the immediate arrest of Tennakoon based on a request made by the CID. (Newswire)
