Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya says the government will take steps to address the long-standing shortage of teachers in the country.

Speaking at a public meeting in the Piliyandala area on April 26, she noted that around 7,500 teachers retire each year, while only about 4,000 new teachers are recruited, resulting in nearly 3,000 vacancies annually. Despite this gap, school education has continued under challenging conditions for years, she added.

The Prime Minister assured that plans are underway to rectify the situation moving forward. (Newswire)
