Popular YouTuber/Blogger sues CID over his arrest in 2023 under the ICCPR Act

Popular Sri Lankan YouTuber/ Blogger Bruno Divakara has initiated legal action against the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) over his arrest in 2023.

Bruno Divakara has filed the case seeking damages in sum of Rs 50 million, for his arrest under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)Act. 

Bruno Divakara, the owner of the YouTube channel ‘SL-Vlogs’,  was arrested by the CID in May 2023 in connection to the controversial stand-up comedy show of Nathasha Edirisooriya, who was accused of having made derogatory comments on Buddhism during her show. 

Divakara was then arrested for sharing video footage of the show on his YouTube channel, ‘SL-Vlogs’, which went viral on social media. He was later remanded. 

Divakara along with Nathasha Edirisooriya were, however, only released from the case related to allegedly making controversial statements on Buddhism in June 2024 after the Attorney General notified Court that all charges against the two were dropped.
