Minister Bimal Rathnayake has rejected claims that the government is shielding corrupt individuals, challenging Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa to present concrete evidence against the government.
“When the Rajapaksas are arrested, it is Sajith who complains. When Yoshitha Rajapaksa was taken into custody, Harshana Rajakaruna seemed the most hurt,” Rathnayake said, urging Premadasa to clarify whether he stands with Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Rajapaksa family, or the people.
He pointed to recent high-profile cases, including the arrest of Yoshitha Rajapaksa, the Krish project linked to MP Namal Rajapaksa, and the Rs. 460 million renovation of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s residence, asserting that the government is taking action against corruption.
“When the government acts, it is Sajith Premadasa’s party, Namal Rajapaksa’s party, Weerawansa, and others who unite to protect thieves. Yet, they accuse us of clearing containers during an emergency,” he said.
“Will we protect thieves? Will we release containers without checks?” Rathnayake questioned, insisting that the current government best understands the people’s mandate.
He acknowledged instances of corruption within Sri Lanka Customs but noted that such issues are not unique to the country. Rathnayake also alleged that SJB’s Sujeewa Senasinghe had been accused of illegal vehicle assembly and questioned how luxury vehicles linked to opposition politicians had entered the country.
He assured that the government is committed to eliminating corruption at all levels, from minor offenses to major scandals. (Newswire)
