The Leader of the Opposition, MP Sajith Premadasa and his Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) party hosted an interactive session with world-renowned Indian Economist and public intellectual Dr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia.
Dr. Ahluwalia is one of India’s most celebrated civil servants having served as Secretary to the Ministry of Finance as well as other positions throughout a long and storied career.
In 1991, India faced a Balance of Payment Crisis, an unsustainable Fiscal Deficit, rising debt, dwindling foreign reserves and low GDP Growth with very high inflation. Indian policymakers devised a series of policies and strategies that set India on the path to liberalization and fiscal consolidation.
Issuing a statement, the SJB said as a former Division Chief of the World Bank, Dr. Ahluwalia was able to respond to a series of questions regarding economic management from members of Sri Lanka’s main opposition party.
Prior to this interactive session, the SJB and Opposition Leader MP Sajith Premadasa held a one-on-one meeting to discuss the policy framework that might provide some relief to Sri Lanka’s people and its economy.
As an architect of India’s economic revival that has led to the subcontinental nation becoming a major player in the global economy, Dr. Ahluwalia’s presence and advice were seen as an inspiration to the audience that included the SJB Intelligensia, Members of Parliament, and members of the Indian CEO Forum.
