The Fuel Distributors’ Association of Sri Lanka has warned that by Monday, fuel stations across the country may run out of fuel, as the association has decided to stop placing orders starting today (1).
Addressing a media briefing, the association’s vice president, Kusum Sandanayake, stated that the fuel available today and tomorrow comes from orders placed by 8:00 a.m. on Friday. Since no new orders will be placed from today, a fuel shortage is expected by Monday (3).
He added that while the association has never resorted to strike action in the past, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation’s (CPC) decision to remove the 3% commission given to distributors and replace it with a new formula has left them with no choice.
Sandanayake urged authorities to take swift action to resolve the issue, blaming the CPC chairman and managing director for making arbitrary decisions.
The CPC recently decided to abolish the 3% commission for fuel distributors and implement a new pricing formula. In response, the Fuel Distributors’ Association announced yesterday (28) that it would stop ordering fuel from today (1), triggering panic buying and long queues at fuel stations nationwide.
