A third hospital assistant has been arrested in connection to the death of a patient who was warded at the National Institute of Mental Health in Mulleriyawa.
According to the Police, the third assistant was arrested last night by officials from the Mulleriyawa Police.
Earlier, two hospital assistants were arrested last evening following the death of a patient who was under treatment at the hospital.
The 48-year-old patient suffering from bipolar disorder is reported to have been hospitalized on July 20 and succumbed to injuries from an alleged assault earlier this week.
It is reported that the patient had been allegedly assaulted by hospital assistants while attempting to restrain the patient.
The Police stated that the three hospital assistants arrested over the patient’s death will be produced before the Hulftsdorp Magistrate’s Court today.
Meanwhile, the Director of the Hospital stated that the hospital has decided to suspend from service the three arrested hospital assistants.
The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka also announced today that an urgent inquiry will be conducted into the incident. (NewsWire)
