Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers issued a clarification today, addressing a remark he made years ago during an AIB podcast. De Villiers had referred to playing in Sri Lanka as “off-season,” which sparked backlash from Sri Lankan fans over time.
In a video shared after Sri Lanka’s recent Test series win against New Zealand, de Villiers explained that his comment was made in a tourism context and was not meant to disrespect the Sri Lankan cricket team. He emphasized that his remarks were lighthearted and not a reflection of Sri Lanka’s cricketing prowess.
”I mentioned this five or six years ago and I was completely misunderstood. What this means is I love traveling there” de Villiers said in a video posted on his Facebook page.
Fans have often revisited his comments, especially after South Africa’s defeats in Sri Lanka.
