The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Women and Child Affairs to allocate Rs. 25 million for the year 2025 for the administration of temporary care homes for female victims of violence.
The Ministry of Women and Child Affairs has maintained a total of 10 care home centres, with one temporary care home each in the Gampaha, Ratnapura, Moneragala, Colombo, Matara, Batticaloa, Mullaitivu, and Jaffna districts and 02 in the Anuradhapura District.
It has been planned to establish one temporary care home in the Nuwara-Eliya district from January 2025.
Certain administrative and maintenance expenses of certain care centers have been directly borne by the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs, while the expenses of certain care homes are borne by several women’s welfare-oriented organizations.
The said organizations have provided protection for 2,852 victimized women from the year 2020 to the second quarter of 2024 at a cost of Rs. 60.35 million.
However, only Rs. 37.69 million was received by the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs as provisions, whereas the bills valued at Rs. 22 million are yet to be settled.
Taking into account these factors, the Cabinet has approved the proposal to allocate Rs. 25 million for the year 2025 and to allocate the provisions necessary for the following years in the annual budget. (Newswire)
