The ‘Player Auction’ for the upcoming Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024 cricket tournament will be held on May 21 in Colombo.
This is the second consecutive year that Sri Lanka’s topmost domestic T20 League is conducting a player auction.
The LPL will be played from July 1st to 21st, starting in Kandy, then in Dambulla, before heading to Colombo for the end of the tournament.
Here are 07 facts on the upcoming LPL Player Auction:
- Charu Sharma, who was part of the previous LPL player drafts, will be the auctioneer of the Lanka Premier League Player Auction 2024, which will consist of 18 rounds.
- Sri Lanka Cricket says 420 cricketers are to be presented for the ‘Player Auction’ out of which 154 are from Sri Lanka and the remaining 266 are overseas players.
- LPL Tournament Director Samantha Dodanwela says over 600 cricketers had registered for the LPL tournament but it was decided to only field nearly 450 cricketers for the ‘Player Auction’.
- The Cricket Selection Committee has provided a list of 140 names of local players, along with 40 names from Cricket Clubs.
- The owners of the Galle and Dambulla teams have changed, while the Kandy team is also anticipating a change in ownership.
- Franchise owners have been permitted to retain or enter into individual contracts with players prior to the Player Auction. Teams are allowed to do so under two methods for a maximum of six cricketers.
- Teams will have a US$ 500,000 budget at the Player Auction. Players can be retained by franchises, by deducting their value from the US$500,000 allocated for the Player Auction and entering into the auction with the remaining money.
