The Election Commission (EC) of Sri Lanka will be authorized to call for the Presidential election starting Wednesday, 17 July 2024, as per the Constitution.

A senior Election Official told Newswire that the commission plans to announce the election date and call for nominations by the end of this month.

Opposition political parties and an election monitoring group have urged the EC to announce the nomination date as soon as possible. However, the commission feels they need sufficient time to prepare for the nomination process and other related tasks.

Last week, Foreign Minister Ali Sabry stated that Sri Lanka’s presidential election is likely to be held on October 5 or 12 this year.

“The presidential election will take place between September 17 and October 17 this year. It is most likely to be held on either Saturday, October 5 or October 12,” he told Parliament. (NewsWire)
