A Sri Lankan woman reported missing during the conflict between Israel and Palestine is suspected to be dead, the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) said.
SLBFE Media spokesman Gamini Senarath Yapa told reporters, that two women and a man were reported missing as of yesterday (Oct 09).
He further said that the SLBFE had received reports of a Sri Lankan woman residing in Israel having been shot dead in the conflict.
“We are unable to confirm the death. There is a procedure followed in the event of a death. Authorities will have to see the body and confirm the identity. However, as authorities are still prohibited from entering the Gaza area, we are unable to confirm the death as yet,” Senarath Yapa explained.
He said that a request has been made to the authorities via the Sri Lankan Embassy and Foreign Ministry to ascertain the details related to the woman.
Giving further details on the Sri Lankan woman, he said she is a mother of two from Gampaha who has travelled to Israel thrice after registering with the SLBFE, adding that she had last travelled to Israel to work as a caregiver.
The fierce battle with Israel started after the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas fired thousands of rockets into Israel in a surprise assault.
According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces has risen to 704, including 143 children.
The Israeli Health Ministry says at least 900 Israelis have been killed and over 2,600 others wounded in the fighting. (NewsWire)
