Government Spokesman Minister Vijitha Herath says the government has not taken any decision to amend the Muslim Marriage Act and will not take such a decision.

Addressing the media today, he said several organizations had shared views on the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act (MMDA) of 1951, adding that they have the right and that the government respects it.

Minister Herath said, however, that the government has not taken any decision to amend the Muslim Marriage Act and that it has not faced a need to make such a decision yet.

“If amendments are required for Religious Acts, they will be made after discussions with the religious leaders of the relevant religion. Changes to any Religious Act will be made only after obtaining the recommendations of the leaders of the said religion,” he added. (Newswire)
