Compensation of over Rs. 4 million has been paid to the family of a Police officer who was killed during a shooting in Weligama recently.
SI Upul Chaminda was killed in a shooting carried out during a narcotics raid in Weligama.
A sum of Rs. 2.5 million from President Ranil Wickremesinghe was handed over to the family by Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles.
Meanwhile, Rs.1.7 million from the Police Department was handed over by Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon to the family.
The tragic incident unfolded near a Weligama hotel, in which the Police Sergeant from the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) lost his life, and a sub-inspector sustained injuries in the shooting.
Initially, it was revealed that the CCD officials engaged in a firefight with suspected individuals.
Unfortunately, another police team on night rounds mistook the CCD officers for criminals and opened fire on their white van near the hotel.
At the time, the Police Spokesman said it couldn’t be confirmed if the CCD officer’s death resulted from police gunfire, as reports reveal that suspects had fired at the van before the arrival of the area police team. (NewsWire)
