Foreign Minister Ali Sabry, currently in Russia for the BRICS 2024 Foreign Ministerial Session with developing countries, held a bilateral meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday (June 10).
During their discussions, Minister Sabry raised concerns about Sri Lankan citizens who have joined the Russian Armed Forces, seeking assistance from Lavrov to address the issues they are facing.
In response, it was agreed that an upcoming meeting on 26-27 June 2024, between a high-level Sri Lankan delegation led by State Minister of Foreign Affairs Tharaka Balasuriya and the Deputy Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation, will review these matters in detail and take appropriate action.
At Minister Sabry’s request, it was agreed that no further recruitment from Sri Lanka into the Russian Armed Forces will occur, the Foreign Ministry said.
The two ministers also agreed to further enhance bilateral relations, focusing on tourism, higher education, and economic cooperation, the Foreign Ministry said. (Newswire)
