Police are yet to arrest the gunmen responsible for the murder of businessman Surendra Wasantha Perera, also known as ‘Club Wasantha,’ Police Media Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa said.
Responding to questions about the progress of the investigation, DIG Thalduwa stated that the police are still on the hunt for the suspects.
However, information suggests that the operation to murder the businessman was orchestrated from overseas, he said.
Thalduwa noted that eight to ten police units have been deployed in the investigation, with several individuals arrested and later released due to lack of evidence.
Commenting on alleged links between ‘Club Wasantha’ and the family members of suspect tattoo shop owner Dulan Sanjula, DIG Thalduwa said that Police have not established any connections.
However, he noted that the mother of the tattoo shop owner was previously arrested on charges of drug peddling.
“Dulan’s mother was arrested in possession of drugs in the Elpitiya Police Division and has two court cases against her,” he said.
The Police spokesperson also refuted claims that the gunmen were military personnel on active duty attached to the Elpitiya army camp, stating that investigations have not revealed such details.
“Investigations have not revealed that the gunmen have fled the country,” he added.
Stating that numerous baseless reports are being circulated on social media, Thalduwa urged media outlets to report responsibly, especially when publicising sensitive information, as it may hinder the investigation. (Newswire)
