A Blue Sapphire retrieved from a mine in the Kattange area in Kahawatte last week has been sold for a record Rs. 430 million at an auction held recently.
According to Ada Newspaper, representatives of the Gem and Jewellery Authority have certified the gemstone as a 99-carat Blue Sapphire.
The Blue Sapphire was auctioned in the Kahawatte area during which several gem businessmen from Ratnapura had participated.
A gem businessman from Kahawatte had initially placed a bid for Rs. 470 million but had requested it for Rs. 60 million less during the auction.
As a result, the gemstone had been sold to a gem businessman from Pelmadulla who had placed the next highest bid. (NewsWire)
