An individual has been arrested over the deaths of two wild elephants in the Buruthagolla area in Hambegamuwa yesterday (Oct 30).
The Police stated that the suspect was employed as a security guard ensuring the safety of a plot of farmland in the area.
The man is reported to have illegally put up an electric fence around the property to ward off wild elephants.
Two elephants that had ventured into the farmland died by electrocution after coming into contact with the fence. The deceased elephants are assumed to be 25 and 15 years of age.
Officials from the Kalthota Wildlife Department conducted investigations into the incident and apprehended the man who had illegally set up the electric fence.
