Sri Lankan leaders express condolence over tragic demise of Iranian President Raisi

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has expressed his condolences over the tragic deaths of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian and other senior Irani officials.

Taking to ‘X’, President Wickremesinghe said, “Sri Lanka is deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic deaths.

“I express my deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to the bereaved families, the government and the people of Iran. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of President Raisi and his entourage,” he added.

Meanwhile, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has also expressed his condolences over the tragic demises of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian.

Taking to ‘X’, Rajapaksa said, “Deeply shocked by the passing of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Min. Amir Abdollahian & their entourage in the tragic helicopter crash.”

Mahinda Rajapaksa further said that President Raisi was a true friend of Sri Lanka and his leadership and dedication towards the Iranian people will always be remembered.

Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian died in a helicopter crash in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province. 

According to foreign media, a total of nine people, including a provincial governor, were on board when the aircraft went down and they all are believed to be dead.

Iran’s vice president will assume the powers of the presidency and new elections will be held within 50 days. (Newswire)
