Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has left the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) after recording a statement for over 05 hours regarding investigations into a SriLankan Airlines Airbus deal.

MP Rajapaksa reported to the CID at 09.00 this morning to record a statement into the 2013 deal involving SriLankan Airlines.

The CID’s investigation focuses on the alleged corruption surrounding the 2013 transaction to purchase 10 Airbus aircraft.

The deal came under scrutiny after a UK Serious Fraud Office (SFO) investigation revealed that 16.84 million in bribes were paid as part of the agreement.

It was further uncovered that 2 million was deposited into a Brunei account linked to the wife of the CEO of SriLankan Airlines at the time, with additional funds transferred to other accounts.

The CID launched an investigation into the matter previously, after which the former CEO of SriLankan Airlines and his wife were arrested in 2020 and later released on bail. (Newswire)
