A traffic Police officer who had deflated the tyre of a container truck alleging that it was obstructing traffic flow has been suspended from duty, it was reported.

According to media reports, the container truck was headed to a warehouse in the Mabola area in Wattala.

The traffic Police officer has taken drastic measures to deflate one front tyre of the vehicle, claiming that it was parked on the road without a driver and was obstructing traffic.

Video footage of the incident shows that despite various bystanders requesting him to refrain from doing so and offering help to find the driver, the Police officer proceeded to deflate the tyre.

The driver of the vehicle who later arrived at the scene had informed the Police officer that he had gone to obtain clearance from the warehouse, due to which he had parked the container truck on the road.

However, the traffic Police officer had given the driver a traffic fine and left the area.

Upon being inquired about the incident, an official from the Police Spokesman’s Office acknowledged that the actions of the said Police officer were unlawful.

The official from the Police Spokesman’s Office further said that the said officer was only authorised to give a Rs. 1000 fine to the driver of the container truck.

The Traffic Police Officer had reportedly been summoned before the Police Traffic Department for a disciplinary inquiry after which he was suspended from duty.

The Sri Lanka Police is conducting further investigations into the incident. (Newswire)
