The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) has warned the public of financial fraud being carried out targeting social media platform, WhatsApp.
Issuing a statement, SLCERT issued an alert on the surge in fake messages being circulated on social media, especially WhatsApp, attempting to obtain confidential information.
SLCERT said cybercriminals were using various methods to obtain sensitive information, such as One-Time-Passwords (OTP), by sending fraudulent messages or embedded links.
Warning the public of such scams, SLCERT warned the public of the risks of sharing OTPs requested through WhatsApp, as this may unintentionally grant malicious intruders access to their accounts.
SLCERT further revealed that several persons and their contacts have fallen victim to such financial scams, with incidents being reported across the country. (Newswire)
