A man who had attempted to fly to Canada using another person’s passport with a valid visa was apprehended at the Katunayake Airport today (June 05), it was reported.

According to Lankadeepa newspaper, the suspect has been identified as a 34-year-old resident of Jaffna.

Upon receiving his flight clearance, the suspect had handed over his passport to the Immigration counter, during which the officer noticed a mismatch between the picture on the passport and the suspect.

Due to suspicion over the passport, it was subjected to technological checks during which it was found to belong to an individual against whom the Trincomalee Magistrate’s Court had imposed a travel ban.

Thereafter, the youth was handed over to the Border Inspection Unit of the Immigration Department during which the officials had found his National Identity Card (NIC).

During interrogations, the suspect had revealed that a broker in Anuradhapura had helped him with obtaining the passport, on the promise that the youth would pay him Rs. 13 million after reaching Canada. (Newswire)
